What a combination! Pizza and wine. They really are a great pair.
We recently went on a bit of a pizza kick and had two great Italian wines to go with them. The first was the S. Andrea in Colle 2010 Il Rosso Toscana IGT. Like most young Sangiovese, it was strong on the fruit, and we got a big splash of cherry and strawberry at the beginning. It had lots of flavor and was a great complement to a spicy, meaty pizza.
The next pizza we had (just a few days later – bad for the waistline!) we paired with the Tenuta del Portale 2008 Starsa Aglianico. This wine from Basilicata had a great aroma, and both the nose and the taste had strong notes of vanilla. Unlike the rather crisp S. Andrea, this Aglianico had a very rich texture, almost creamy. The thin crust pizza went well with the oak, grass and char flavors of the wine. We really liked both wines, but give the slight nod to southern Italy over Tuscany this time.
So what are your favorite wines to have with pizza? Or does anything go well? It would be hard to go wrong, that’s for sure.

Southern Italian wines are really coming along. Same with Sardinian wines. I haven’t had the Tenuta yet. I’ll have to check it out.

Just got back from Southern Italy and the Basilicata region is beautiful. Aglianico wines go great with caciocavallo cheese!
